Russian Orthodox Icon "Virgin The Joy of All that Mourn". Russia, icon painted in 19th century, Jaroslavl school. Wood, tempera, gesso, hand painted on a leaf of gold. Size 31 cm x 26 cm (10.2" x 12.1" x 1.2"). The iconographical source for Virgin of Joy is found in various hymns in honor of the Virgin, in part from the prayer of the Canon of the Virgin where she is called “Joy of All Sorrowful”. In the icon’s center, among the sorrowful”, the Virgin with infant depicted as their champion before Christ. Above her is a scroll with the inscription, “The Clothing Of the Naked” and “The Healing of the Sick.” Similar icons became especially revered in Russia during the second half of 17th century after the sister of the Patriarch Ioakim Evfimiya was mirracously cured by the icon “Virgin The Joy of All that Mourn” on October 24, 1688. This became the church day of celebration for the icon. Good condition. Very nice piece of religious art. The certificate is available upon request from Lithuanian Culture Department testifying the authenticity and age of the icon.
